Tiger's Golden Coat
Long, long ago, in a time when stories were first being told, Tiger had a beautiful golden coat that shone like the morning sun. He was very proud of his smooth, bright fur and would spend hours by the clear river admiring his reflection.
Tiger would strut through the village with his head held high, showing off his magnificent coat to all the other animals. "Look at me!" he would say. "Have you ever seen anything so beautiful? I am surely the most handsome animal in all the land!"
Anansi Watches
From his web high in a mango tree, Anansi the spider watched Tiger preening by the river. Anansi was small and clever, with eight thin legs and twinkling eyes that sparkled with mischief. He had dark, fuzzy spider fur and wore a tiny woven hat that his grandmother had made for him.
"Hmm," thought Anansi, rubbing his front legs together. "Tiger thinks he's so special with that plain golden coat. Perhaps it's time for a little... improvement!" Anansi grinned to himself as a wonderfully tricky idea began to form in his clever mind.
Anansi's Clever Plan
The next morning, Anansi scurried down to the village market where the people sold beautiful fabrics and paints. He found pots of black paint that the artists used to decorate calabashes and pottery. Carefully, he gathered some paintbrushes and set up near the river where Tiger liked to drink.
When Tiger arrived for his morning drink, Anansi called out cheerfully, "Good morning, my friend Tiger! You look lovely today, but I have something that will make you even more magnificent than before!"
The Magic Paint
Tiger's ears perked up with interest. "More magnificent? But I'm already the most beautiful animal in the land! How could I possibly look better?" he asked, though he couldn't help but be curious about what Anansi had in mind.
Anansi danced excitedly on his eight legs. "This, my dear Tiger, is magic paint from the wisest artists in the village! It creates the most fashionable markings that all the elegant animals in faraway lands are wearing. You'll be the first to have this special style right here in our village!"
Tiger Gets Painted
Tiger thought about it for a moment. He did want to be the most fashionable animal around! "Very well, Anansi," he said proudly. "Paint these special markings on me, but be very careful. I must look absolutely perfect!"
Anansi picked up his brushes and began to paint long, curvy black stripes all across Tiger's golden coat. He painted stripes on Tiger's sides, on his back, on his legs, and even on his beautiful face. "Hold very still," Anansi said, trying not to giggle. "This magic paint takes time to work properly!"
Tiger's New Look
When Anansi finished painting, he stepped back to admire his work. "There!" he announced. "You are now the most fashionably dressed animal in the entire world! Go look at yourself in the river and see how magnificent you are!"
Tiger strutted proudly to the water's edge and looked down at his reflection. At first, he was shocked to see the black stripes covering his once-solid golden coat. But as he turned this way and that, he had to admit that the stripes did look rather striking and elegant.
The Village Reacts
When Tiger walked back into the village with his new stripes, all the other animals stopped and stared in amazement. "Tiger!" called out Parrot. "You look absolutely wonderful! Those stripes make you look so distinguished!" Even wise old Turtle nodded approvingly.
Tiger puffed up with pride. He had never received so many compliments before! The stripes really did make him look special and unique. He decided that he rather liked his new appearance after all.
Why Tigers Have Stripes
From that day forward, Tiger wore his stripes with great pride, and all of his children and their children were born with beautiful black stripes on golden coats, just like him. Anansi smiled in his web, pleased that his trick had turned out so well for everyone.
And that, dear children, is why all tigers have stripes to this day! Sometimes the best changes come from the most unexpected places, and even a little spider's trick can create something beautiful that lasts forever.
