Coyote Steals Fire
A Native American Tale

The Cold Village
Long ago, when the world was still new, the people lived in a village nestled between rolling hills and tall pine trees. But their world was cold and dark, for they had no fire to warm their homes or cook their food.
Coyote, with his golden fur and bright amber eyes, watched the people shiver in their beautiful tipis decorated with colorful patterns. His kind heart ached to see them so cold. 'There must be a way to help them,' he thought, his bushy tail twitching with determination.
The Fire Beings' Mountain
High on a distant mountain lived the Fire Beings, magical creatures who kept all the fire in the world to themselves. Their mountain glowed warm and bright, while everywhere else remained cold and dark.
Coyote stood at the base of the mountain, looking up at the glowing peak. 'The Fire Beings have more fire than they could ever use,' he said to himself. 'Surely they wouldn't miss just a small flame.' But Coyote knew he couldn't do this alone - the mountain was too high and the Fire Beings too watchful.
Gathering Friends
Coyote traveled through the forest, visiting his animal friends. First, he found Rabbit, who was quick as lightning with long powerful legs. Then he met Squirrel, who could climb any tree faster than the wind. Finally, he found Frog, who could leap great distances with his strong webbed feet.
'Friends,' said Coyote, 'the people need fire to stay warm. Will you help me bring it to them?' Without hesitation, all three friends nodded. They loved the people too and wanted to help make their lives better.
The Plan
Under the starlit sky, the four friends made their plan. 'I'll sneak up the mountain and grab a burning stick,' explained Coyote. 'Then I'll run down and pass the fire to Rabbit, who will run to Squirrel, who will run to Frog, who will bring it safely to the village.'
They practiced their relay, running from tree to tree, pretending to pass the precious fire. Each animal knew exactly where to wait and where to run. 'Remember,' said Coyote, 'we must work together. The fire depends on all of us.'
Coyote's Brave Climb
As dawn broke, Coyote quietly climbed the glowing mountain. The higher he went, the warmer it became. At the top, he saw the Fire Beings' beautiful lodge, with flames dancing in a circle around a great fire pit.
The Fire Beings were sleeping peacefully, their faces glowing in the firelight. Very carefully, very quietly, Coyote crept forward. He gently picked up a burning stick in his mouth, trying not to wake anyone. The fire felt warm and wonderful - exactly what his people needed.
The Great Chase
Just as Coyote picked up the burning stick, one of the Fire Beings opened his eyes! 'The fire!' he called out gently. 'Someone is taking our fire!' The Fire Beings woke up and began to follow Coyote, not angry but concerned about their precious flames.
Coyote ran down the mountain as fast as his legs could carry him, the burning stick glowing in his mouth. Behind him, the Fire Beings called out, 'Please be careful with that fire!' They weren't mean - they just wanted to protect their gift.
The Amazing Relay
At the bottom of the mountain, Rabbit was waiting just as planned. Coyote passed the burning stick to his friend, and Rabbit bounded away with incredible speed, his powerful legs carrying him swiftly through the forest.
Rabbit handed the fire to Squirrel, who scampered up trees and leaped from branch to branch. Then Squirrel gave it to Frog, who made mighty jumps across streams and rocks. Each friend was careful to keep the precious flame burning bright and safe.
Fire Comes to the People
Frog hopped into the village and carefully placed the burning stick in the center of the community. Immediately, the people gathered around, their faces lighting up with joy and wonder as warmth spread through their home.
From that day forward, the people had fire to cook their food and warm their lodges. Coyote and his friends became heroes, and the Fire Beings, seeing how happy the people were, decided to share their gift. Everyone learned that the best gifts are those that are shared with others who need them.
