Momotaro the Peach Boy
A Japanese Tale

The Giant Peach
Down by the sparkling river where cherry blossoms danced on the breeze, Grandmother knelt to wash clothes on the smooth stones. The water bubbled and sang as she worked, her gentle hands moving in rhythm with the flowing current.
Suddenly, something extraordinary bobbed toward her—a peach so enormous it seemed to glow like a pink lantern in the sunlight. 'Oh my!' she gasped, her eyes wide with wonder. The peach was as big as a festival drum, perfectly round and sweet-smelling, unlike anything she had ever seen.
A Boy is Born
Back in their cozy wooden house, Grandmother and Grandfather sat before the magnificent peach, marveling at its sweet fragrance that filled their home like springtime itself. When Grandfather lifted his knife to cut it open, the peach began to tremble and shake.
With a gentle crack that sounded like morning bells, the peach split open, and out stepped the most beautiful boy they had ever seen! His cheeks were as rosy as peach blossoms, his eyes sparkled like stars, and his smile warmed their hearts instantly. 'I am Momotaro,' he said with a bow, 'and I have come to be your son.'
Growing Strong and Kind
Years passed like seasons changing, and Momotaro grew stronger and kinder with each day. He helped Grandfather tend their vegetable garden, his laughter ringing out as they pulled carrots and picked tomatoes. He assisted Grandmother with her weaving, his gentle hands learning to create beautiful patterns.
But as Momotaro grew, troubling news reached their peaceful village. Across the sea on Demon Island, fierce oni were stealing treasures and frightening people. The boy's brave heart stirred with determination—he knew he must help those in need.
The Journey Begins
On a crisp morning when dewdrops sparkled like tiny jewels, Momotaro prepared for his journey. Grandmother packed him a bundle of her famous millet dumplings, each one made with love and wrapped in bamboo leaves. The sweet, nutty aroma made his mouth water.
With his grandfather's blessing and his grandmother's tears of pride, Momotaro set off down the mountain path. His blue happi coat fluttered in the breeze, and the peach emblem on his back caught the golden sunlight as he walked bravely toward his destiny.
Three Faithful Friends
As Momotaro walked through the whispering forest, he met a hungry dog whose golden fur caught the dappled sunlight. 'Please share your food,' the dog asked politely. Momotaro smiled and offered a dumpling, and the grateful dog decided to join his quest.
Soon a clever monkey swung down from the trees, followed by a magnificent pheasant whose feathers shimmered like jewels. Each asked for food, and each received Momotaro's kindness along with a delicious dumpling. 'We will help you defeat the oni!' they declared, and so the brave band of friends continued together.
Across the Sea
At the shore where waves crashed like thunder against black rocks, Momotaro and his friends found a sturdy boat waiting as if by magic. The salty sea spray kissed their faces as they sailed across the churning waters, their hearts beating with courage and determination.
The pheasant soared overhead as their scout, her keen eyes watching for danger. The monkey's nimble hands helped manage the sail, while the loyal dog kept watch at the bow. Together they sailed toward the dark outline of Demon Island rising from the mist like a sleeping giant.
The Battle with the Oni
On Demon Island, fierce oni with wild hair and gleaming teeth guarded their stolen treasures behind massive iron gates. But Momotaro and his friends were ready! The pheasant dove from the sky, the monkey leaped with amazing agility, and the dog bounded forward with fierce loyalty.
Momotaro's brave voice rang out across the rocky island as he challenged the oni to return what they had stolen. The battle was swift but mighty, with friendship and courage proving stronger than fear and greed. The oni, amazed by such bravery, surrendered and promised to change their ways.
Heroes Return Home
With the stolen treasures restored and the oni reformed, Momotaro and his faithful friends sailed home as the sun painted the sky in shades of peach and gold. The treasures they carried would help many people, but the greatest treasure was their friendship and the kindness they had shared.
Back in their village, Grandmother and Grandfather welcomed their brave son with tears of joy and the warmest hugs. The whole village celebrated with lanterns and music, and Momotaro knew that courage and friendship could overcome any challenge. His heart was as full as a perfect peach, glowing with love and happiness.
