Ra's Journey Through the Night
An Egyptian Tale
North Africa — Egyptian
The Sun Sinks Low
Every evening, when the sky turns the color of ripe mangoes and warm honey, something magical happens over the land of Egypt. The great sun god Ra finishes his journey across the daytime sky and dips below the sandy horizon, painting the pyramids in shades of orange and rose.
Ra stretches his arms and yawns a golden yawn. "Time for my nighttime adventure," he says with a smile. Below the edge of the world, a shimmering river waits for him — a river that flows through a land of wonders hidden beneath the earth.
His golden boat bobs gently on the glowing water, ready to carry him through the magical underworld. Every single night, Ra makes this journey, so the sun can rise again each morning. And every single night, he is brave enough to go.
Into the Glowing River
Ra steps carefully into his golden boat. Its sides are carved with lotus flowers and bright blue scarabs, and it glows with a warm, soft light — like a lantern floating on water. The river beneath sparkles with tiny golden stars, as if someone sprinkled the night sky into the stream.
"Here we go," Ra whispers, and the boat begins to glide forward. The world around him changes. Instead of sand and sky, tall cavern walls rise up, covered in glittering crystals of purple and blue. Soft fireflies drift through the air like floating jewels.
Ra lifts his staff, and its gentle glow lights the way ahead. The underworld is not dark and scary — oh no! It is full of wonder, like the inside of a treasure chest, sparkling and humming with magic.
Friends Along the Way
As the golden boat rounds a bend in the river, Ra hears a cheerful clicking sound. There on a smooth stone sits little Khepri the scarab beetle, polishing his shimmering green-and-gold shell with his tiny legs.
"Ra! Ra! You're here!" Khepri chirps, hopping aboard the boat with a happy bounce. His turquoise scarf flutters behind him. "I've been waiting all day to help you!"
Ra laughs warmly. "I'm glad you're here, little friend. Every hero needs a companion." Khepri scurries to the front of the boat, his iridescent shell catching the light like a tiny emerald sun. Together they sail deeper into the glowing underworld, where the crystals on the walls begin to hum a gentle lullaby.
Maat and Thoth Appear
The river widens into a great underground lake, and there on the glassy shore stand two familiar friends. Maat, with her tall white feather swaying gracefully, waves her hand in welcome. Her small white wings shimmer at her shoulders. Beside her, Thoth adjusts his crescent moon headdress and taps his glowing scroll thoughtfully.
"We have news," Thoth says in his calm, wise voice, his ibis beak dipping as he speaks. "Apophis is up ahead, and he's in a very grumpy mood tonight. He's tangled himself across the river again."
Maat steps lightly into the boat, her golden anklets jingling like tiny bells. "Don't worry, Ra. We'll face him together, with courage and with kindness." Ra nods, feeling braver already with his friends beside him. The boat sails on, carrying four hearts full of hope.
The Grumpy Serpent
And there he is — Apophis! The big, round, plump serpent is coiled across the entire river like a giant purple-and-indigo knot. His silver star-spotted belly puffs up as he grumbles, and his big lavender eyes squint grumpily at the approaching boat.
"GO AWAY!" Apophis huffs, though it sounds more like a pouty yawn than a roar. "I don't want the sun to come back! I like it dark and quiet. Morning is too bright and too noisy!"
Little Khepri hides behind Ra's ankle, peeking out with wide eyes. But Ra stands tall and gentle on his boat, his staff glowing steadily. He is not afraid — he can see that Apophis isn't mean, just grumpy and tired. Every night the same thing happens, and every night Ra knows just what to do.
A Song of Light
Ra raises his golden staff high, and instead of fighting, he begins to sing. His voice is warm and deep, like sunlight feels on your face on a spring morning. Maat joins in, her voice clear as a bell, and the white feather in her hair begins to glow.
Thoth opens his glowing scroll, and silver words float off the page like little butterflies, swirling around Apophis. They are words of comfort, words of peace. "The world needs both night and day," Thoth says gently. "You are part of this story too, Apophis."
The music fills the cavern, and the crystals on the walls begin to ring along, chiming softly. Apophis blinks his big lavender eyes. His coils loosen, just a little. His grumpy frown begins to soften. The song of light is doing its gentle, wonderful work.
Apophis Lets Go
With one last, long, sleepy sigh, Apophis uncoils himself from across the river. He stretches his plump body and settles onto a smooth warm ledge beside the water, curling into a comfortable spiral like a big scaly cat.
"Fine," Apophis mumbles, his lavender eyes already drooping closed. "But tomorrow night, I'm blocking the river again." He lets out a snore that sounds like rumbling thunder, and a tiny smile curls at the corner of his blunt snout.
Khepri giggles and waves a tiny golden leg. "See you tomorrow, Apophis!" The boat glides past the sleeping serpent, and everyone aboard feels warm and glad. They didn't need to fight — they just needed to be kind, patient, and brave. The way ahead is clear, and the river shines brighter than ever.
The Sun Returns
The golden boat reaches the far end of the underworld, where a great archway opens to the sky above. Khepri scurries to the very tip of the boat and pushes with all his tiny might, helping to nudge the sun back up into the heavens — just as scarab beetles have done since the very beginning of time.
Ra rises through the archway, and his golden glow spreads across the land of Egypt like a warm blanket. The Nile River sparkles. The palm trees sway. Children rub their sleepy eyes and smile, because the sun is back, as it always is, as it always will be.
"Thank you, my friends," Ra whispers to Maat, Thoth, and little Khepri as they wave goodbye. "Until tonight." And somewhere deep below the earth, Apophis snores peacefully, dreaming of stars, already waiting for tomorrow's adventure to begin again.
