Urashima Taro and the Dragon Palace
A Japanese Tale

The Kind Fisherman
Long ago in a peaceful Japanese village by the sea, there lived a gentle young fisherman named Urashima Taro. Every morning, he would take his small wooden boat out into the calm blue waters to catch fish for his village.
Taro had kind eyes and a warm smile, and he always treated every creature of the sea with respect. The fish seemed to know this, and even the dolphins would sometimes play near his boat as he worked.
A Turtle in Trouble
One sunny morning, as Taro was fishing near the shore, he heard a sad crying sound. Looking around, he saw some children on the beach gathered around something, laughing and shouting.
Taro rowed his boat closer and saw a large sea turtle turned upside down on the sand. The poor turtle was trying to flip over but couldn't manage it alone. The children were poking at it with sticks, not understanding that they were hurting the gentle creature.
A Rescue
Taro quickly pulled his boat onto the beach and walked over to the children. 'Please don't hurt the turtle,' he said gently. 'It's scared and far from home.' He carefully picked up the heavy turtle and explained to the children how important it was to be kind to all sea creatures.
The children understood and helped Taro carry the turtle to the water's edge. Together, they gently placed the beautiful creature back into the warm, welcoming waves where it belonged.
The Turtle's Gift
The turtle looked up at Taro with wise, grateful eyes before swimming away. Taro waved goodbye and returned to his fishing, feeling happy that he had helped a creature in need.
Suddenly, the water around his boat began to shimmer and glow. The same turtle surfaced beside him, but now it could speak! 'Kind Taro,' said the turtle in a gentle voice, 'I am a messenger from the Dragon Palace under the sea. Princess Otohime wishes to thank you for your kindness.'
Journey to the Dragon Palace
'Hold onto my shell,' said the magical turtle, 'and I will take you to a wondrous place.' Taro felt a bit nervous but trusted his new friend. As soon as he touched the turtle's shell, a beautiful bubble of air surrounded them both.
Down, down, down they went through the crystal-clear water. Fish of every color swam alongside them, and the water grew more and more beautiful as they descended toward the ocean floor.
The Magnificent Dragon Palace
At the bottom of the sea stood the most beautiful palace Taro had ever seen. It was made of coral and precious pearls that glowed with soft, rainbow colors. Elegant towers reached up toward the surface, and gardens of sea flowers swayed gently in the current.
Princess Otohime herself came to greet them. She wore flowing robes that shimmered like the ocean itself, and her smile was as warm as sunshine. 'Welcome, kind Taro,' she said. 'You have shown great kindness to my friend, and now you are our honored guest.'
A Magical Visit
Princess Otohime showed Taro the wonders of the Dragon Palace. They walked through gardens where fish swam like birds, and ate delicious foods that tasted like the sweetest dreams. Taro danced with sea creatures and listened to the beautiful music of whale songs.
Time seemed to flow differently in this magical place. What felt like a few wonderful days was filled with joy, laughter, and new friendships. Taro had never been so happy, but slowly he began to miss his village and his life above the waves.
A Bittersweet Farewell
When Taro finally told Princess Otohime that he wished to return home, she understood with a sad but gentle smile. 'You have a kind heart that belongs with your people,' she said. Before he left, she gave him a beautiful jewelry box tied with golden ribbon. 'This is a gift to remember our friendship, but promise me you will never open it.'
The turtle carried Taro safely back to the surface. As he reached his village, he discovered that many years had passed while he was away. His old friends were now elderly, and new children played where he once had. Though he felt sad to have lost so much time, Taro's heart was filled with the memory of kindness and the magic that comes from helping others. He kept Princess Otohime's box safe, treasuring both the gift and the wonderful memories of his adventure under the sea.
